The Demise
It seems appropriate that I write this on the blog of my defunct cinema Brash. It has been almost five years since I posted here. Today marks also the closing of NU107.5 which heralded the rise of Pinoy rock in the Philippines. Now the question everyone is asking is now what? Where will we go if we want to listen to Pinoy rock? (or rock in general for that matter) Just like online piracy will never kill anyone’s ability to make music, Filipino music will find a way. It just may not be as convenient as turning your radio dial, but you will be able to find it, if you are looking for it.
It’s probably just as well as that the tree of art be refreshed because it was getting top heavy. We have many former revolutionaries sitting at the top churning out stuff that frankly isn’t that good anymore. There will (as there always will be) a new generation that will produce new stuff that we’ve never heard of before. They will do it in new spaces, on online radio, pirated stations, or maybe another rock radio will rise from the ashes. I, for one, am not worried. Thanks old rock radio station for pushing up new artists to our awareness. Hello, next generation, what are you guys going to come up with?
Besides being an old foggie myself, maybe some of us should be moving away from all this artistic angst in the first place. Which brings me to my next question, should old people move away from art? Isn’t it time we should just start making kids who will be next appreciators of art? Libertarianism, a concept I’m just getting a grasp of myself, says that we are free to choose what we want. So I guess I will never give up on art, even though I will surely come across to some as an aging hipster. :)
