Now I've got time to rant
I was reading an article today about Teofisto Guingona, and he is a prime example of a grandstander. That is the problem of the old generation (and some of the new generation). The need to grandstand. The need to say something when you really have nothing to say. This goes even deeper for the older generation. They need to make yabang, when what they are making yabang is really nothing to be proud of. They thump the nationalism card, when it is just a secret form of racism. The generation above us was a very insecure generation. They kept on wanting to espouse first world values without doing the first world work ethic. Just because the Americans, treated us so well, we think we are advanced as they are. It is like a rich man's son or son's son's son's. Once we were great and we always think we will be. When greatness is dependent on work and good ideas.
Let me drift a bit.
Kamiseta (and probably Bayo) and Bench have started to finally reach global standards of clothing. But they haven't reached that breakthrough moment yet. That breakthrough moment is this. When you imitate, that's fine, but all you can do is imitate. But when you finally create something that is high-quality, unique and can only be found in this country, than you have made that breakthrough. Look at Parokya, Eraserheads and Ichyworms or even Quark's work. They have made breakthrough coz if you want that kind of product you have to go this country. In clothing we still haven't made that breakthrough, yet. But its just a matter of time. We did make a breakthrough with indigenous materials. I went to a Citem fair recently and omigosh, the superior quality and originality of the things I saw there. Things like I've never seen before. One even made of out of water lilies. If I had a job right now, it would be this, to be the observer of the Philippine Renaissance, and contribute to it too, in my own small (or big) way. Go Philippines! =)
