Romantic Frazer Pattenden made his own movie to propose to his girlfriend.
He even persuaded a local cinema to show the two-minute film when he went on a night out with sweetheart Julia Hatcher.

And when Mr Pattenden, an IT manager from Buckhamshire, loomed large on the silver screen to pop the question, he was rewarded by Miss Hatcher saying yes.

She said: "I was very shocked but very happy. I was completely taken by surprise but it was fantastic, you have got to do it in style."

Open mouthed

Mr Pattenden, from Marlow, took about 30 friends to the Duke of York's cinema in Brighton, Sussex, to watch the Japanese film All About Lily Chou Chou.

His movie, which featured him dressed as a 50s private detective and clutching a diamond ring, was shown before the main feature.

Miss Hatcher, from Twickenham, London, was left open-mouthed as her boyfriend appeared on the big screen.

As the lights came on, Mr Pattenden produced the ring and repeated the proposal to cheers from the audience and Julia said "yes".

Cinema's manager Blake Smith said: "It was a public audience and so they didn't know what was happening.

"But they all cheered and applauded when they realised."

Frazer said the most difficult part was persuading everyone to go to the cinema in the first place.

"Trying to get 30 people along to see a film called All About Lily Chou Chou is not easy," he said.

He added that he had made the film with the help of friends from a local production company, but came up with the idea himself.

The couple, who have been together four and a half years, plan to wed next year.
