Slim Shady is so hot right now its fucking scary. Due to the success of 8 Mile right now, some people are heralding him to be the next Elvis. First J. Lo and now this, it looks like the future superstars are going to be coming from cross-overs. And it’s a simple story, people just writing / making movies about their lives. I wouldn’t be surprised if we start hearing Oscar talk soon. Now I haven’t even seen the movie yet, but the vibe is so fucking great. Great, that’s all we need, more crewcutted white-haired dudes. But what can we do, when one achieves greatness, the world follows. Not too different from the Beckham cut or the Ronaldo cut.
Anyway, let’s analyze the success of Slim Shady. Slim Shady is the every man. He is not black, he is not white. He is just poor. Race is no longer an issue, it’s poverty. And there are just too many goddamn people in America and in the world who are sick of being poor, and that’s what this guy is all about.
Watch his latest MTV, that is the soundtrack of 8 Mile, and that’s what it is all about, living your dream, going for the golden ring. Or course we have to credit the other people who have made his movie a success. Curtis Hanson, Brittany Murphy, Dr. Dre. Mr. Hanson, the Oscar is calling, and I haven’t even seen the movie yet.
Why the Oscar? Coz the Oscar and Hollywood is about people rising from the trenches. Rising to do great things. The American Dream. Now the global dream.
Oh, and the fucker is only 30.
Moneywise, this movie is going to be the Titanic of the Fall. It won’t make as much money as the Titanic, but its going to make a lot of money. The legs on this movie will be amazing. I wouldn’t be surprised if it hits 200 million dollars or even more. But it probably won’t hit 300. Slim will probably launch into action movies and drama movies and have a full Hollywood career in front of him. That’s the breaks of the game, fellers, surprises come from nowhere.
Another analysis of the movie by somebody else. This guy is the next Rocky.
Stallone came from nowhere. He was known as the Italian Stallion, a porn star. Then he made Rocky. And everything changed. Rocky got Best Director nods, Best Editor and won for Best Picture. A guy who couldn't even speak straight got Best Actor nominations. Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenplay, all got nominations. It's whacked.
Gawd, I love greatness, when it happens.
Anyway, more numbers from this article.
"8 Mile exploded on Friday with $19.76M in ticket sales, slipped 4% to $18.9M on Saturday, and dropped 33% to $12.6M on Sunday. The Eminem film posted the fourth best opening in the history of Universal after The Lost World ($72.1M), The Mummy Returns ($68.1M), and How the Grinch Stole Christmas ($55.1M). It also registered the fifth largest November bow trailing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ($90.3M), Monsters Inc. ($62.6M), Toy Story 2 ($57.4M), and Grinch. All those movies blasted off in over 3,000 theaters while 8 Mile opened in under 2,500 locations. 8 Mile also scored the third best opening average this year for a wide release after the megablockbusters Spider-Man ($31,769) and Star Wars Episode II ($25,317)."
another article here.
by the way, Curtis Hanson was born in 1945, which shows age has nothing to do with it.
Channel V has obviously caught onto the vibe coz they just showed MyNameIs, Purple Pills and Losing It, in order. V is actually good at picking up on vibe more than MTV Asia. Though MTV USA did choose Without Me as the MTV of the year again, to my great chagrin, but now in hindsight was pure genius of MTV to do so. I wonder when Joseph Khan, the director, will finally get to do his first movie or even his Transformers live-action movie. Khan has a lot of backers now.
Okay, back to Eminem now. 8 Mile has a typical "can-do" plot, which is why it works. Unfortunately (and fortunately, imo), it works. If you listen to his original MyNameIs song, it's all about him making it into the top. I am starting to understand Rap a little better now. The reason why it is so arrogant and so angry, is that these people have to keep on telling themselves these things to survive everyday. It's like being in one giant funk. One must work hard to get out of it.
