in my continuing discourse about art and film criticism
there seems to have been a certain type of art/film criticism that flourished in the west side of manhattan, that lived in little box-type apartments, read the New Yorker and feel that Woody Allen is god. These guys think that every good movie was made prior to the 1980's and the only good art films that exist in the world now either come from france, scandinavia or southeast asia (or some other obscure part of the world) while there is another movement which I will call the indie movement, that grew up in the mountains of Park City, Utah. (Sundance) lived off cheetos and big Gulp drinks at Seven Eleven and consider skateboarding and bungie jumping to be a sport.
There is a marked difference between these two art forms. One considers the other stupid and immature while the other one considers the other to be simply boring. I obviously favor the latter. The solution, I believe is this, the art film lovers have to embrace the new cinema, well because its the new thing and the indie film lovers have to watch the occassional art film, to realize that there are many forms of art film. and i wouldn't be surprised if art films are simply the indie films of before. its the classic battle of old vs. new. and then one day indie film lovers will be considered old, too, replaced by what? britney spears? uh-oh.
i wonder if there is anybody who can stay consistently cool, meaning they always know quality when they see it. whether it be in art, indie or even pop. such "open-mindedness" is priceless. =) but going back to the woody allen-lover sitting in his box, these guys can all go to hell, for holding back art. let the skateboarder class flourish! Go Spike Jonze! And then one day, we'll grow old, too! And then viva the next art movement!!! right now nga, we have to accept the reality of britney, and then who knows.
that's what i like about the capitalistic market, they are always very practical. they just go where the money goes, hence hollywood continues to survive! =) hollywood and america is this amazing capitalistic machine that continues to survivie. they continue to adapt to modify, to stay number one. the motto of america is to stay number one. and then after to many institutions are established, they can move somewhere else or overthrow the current ones. america is great at overthrowing institutions. which is one of its greatest strengths. look at japan right now. it can't seem to overthrow its old institutions and thus it is thrownback. america was almost overwhelmed in the 80's but America struck back and look at the american economy now and look at the japanese one. poor japan. america works. and i want the philippines to too =)
the overhaul will begin at philippine cinema. we have to find a global champion (like the way bata won) to bring pride back our country. we have to win an oscar for best picture. heck, even any oscar would do. cannes was fine but an oscar is better! =)
gawrsh, i don't want to pour out to much of my plan here, but i couldn't resist. tick-tock, life goes on... its what happens when you are making plans =) good line, that is. good line.
through this website, i proclaim myself to the world! hoping to find kindred spirits that will hear my call, and we are going to take on this world! make it into one giant Sweden! =)
