part 2 of my conversation with ...
he said that great movie maker come every 30 years
and i asked him why, he says its because of a generational thing, after the great one comes out, all the rest live in his shadow
i countered and said, we just follow lock, stock whatever America does, 5 years later.
so my assesment, it may have been before that new a new breed of directors after every 30 years, because the Philippines is very patriachal. but in the modern world, this gap will now be shorter.
anyway, he continued and said that the shadow of lina brocka must be broken. the dragon must be slain. what may have made us great before must be forgotten or else we will simply be making pale imitations of a really old thing.
prior to Brocka, there was the generation of sina Gerry de Leon, et al. i'm not sure who the Brocka was of that time.
so is Quark, the one for this time?
anyway, he compared it also to the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth generation filmmakers of China. Many of which recently have come from the Beijing Film Academy. who's link I can find only here. that link is down. but i just want to show it to you to show it exists. from here came Zhang Yimou and Wayne Wang. If you want to study it what is probably the best school in Asia (if not among the best in the world), one should study here. Of course knowing some Chinese would be helpful. Go to google and put in Beijing Film Academy to find out more.
Which reminds me, we should plan a trip to Hong Kong next year, for the festival. Maybe we can all stay in Paolo Cruz's place ;)
