I was talking with Margie yesterday and we we’re thinking about the paradigm shift that is happening in Hollywood today. The age of the 20-million dollar acter seems to be in the wane. And the value of the superstar director is on the upswing.
Think about the movies that have been released recently. Minority Report was more famous coz it was directed by Spielberg. Planet of the Apes was famous coz it was directed by Tim Burton. Lord of the Rings was famous coz it was directed by Peter Jackson (ok, fine, it may have something to do with the book na rin, hehehe).
Even Hollywood acters now are starting to direct more and more. George Clooney with Confessions of A Dangerous Mind. Salma Hayek with some new movie. Vincent D’Onofrio. Tom Hanks. Mel Gibson. etc. I guess it’s Hollywood’s way of acknowledging that people want more intelligent movies. That the director determines the movie just as much as the actor, if not even more so. The purveyors of the French New Wave would’ve been proud.
So I guess it is only a matter of time, till directors become just as famous or even as well-paid as Hollywood acters. Maybe one day, we’ll have to the 20 million dollar director. Who knows :)
