well it looks like Louis de Bernieres finally has released a new book, and as expected the critics trashed it. i've never read captain corelli's mandolin, and expect to be humbled once again. yet at this moment, i have to say, damn the critics. his great book, the troublesome offspring of cardinal guzman, trumps them all.
i can't wait to read this book, all of the sudden. it's supposed to be a 600 to 650 pager book. quite daunting (i hate it when i go off-tangent, oh well). anyway, i wonder how long it will take before it hits Fully Booked.
oh yeah, have i told you about my theory of groupie criticing. someone reads a book or watches a movie, and sees something great. unfortunately not everybody gets to read this book. and there is no point heradling an old book, because it means, gasp! you weren't there. so you can only herald the next one BEFORE it even comes out. it's basically the reverse of saying, i was the first one who discovered something, and everything after that is so passe. snobbery at it's finest. i hate snobs. anyway...
that movie was okay, but have you seen... hehehe
and then there is the you've seen one of his works you've seen them all moment. like snatch and lock, stock and two smoking barrels, which ever movie you saw first, it becomes the quintessential guy ritchie flick. like the way Brother was for me and Kitano. Ooooh, Kitano might kick my ass (wink)
but, of course, there is always the greatest work, that stands above everything else. and knocks away everything else in it's path. for me, the greatest burton works, for example, was Mars Attacks and his produced, Nightmare Before Christmas. Of course, this may simply be a case of what I said in the paragraph before this, but what can I do. I'm only human. Which is why we try to find things at the beginning, to not be jaded. but then we are guilty of the i saw it first snobbery. you can see, it can get very complicated. but oh well, it all boils down to a case of sticking to your guns. and trying your best to do what's right. cheers
and oh yeah, quote of the day, of course comes from Bernieres.
trying to come up with a book, that is supposed to beat your last unbeatable book is like
"trying to get an erection in the middle of Trafalgar Square with everybody looking"
Haha! His wit is still there, so I'm looking forward to his book.
