It’s Not A Pleasure to Give It to You AGAIN, Clint! By Joey Fernandez
For some reason, it’s easier to write a review when you’re mad than when you’re happy. Take Constantine, for instance, I have been sitting on my not-so-fat ass for the last two weeks, thinking about what to write in my review and I Loved that movie. But the Oscars, the show that got me so riled up last Monday, is only taking me two days to write. Hehe. Anyway, so here we go.
The biggest problem of the Oscars on Monday was this. America tries to show the world that they are all universal and all that. That they are blind to race, religion, creed, etc. But the selection of Million Dollar Baby as Best Picture, sets that all back. Fine, they chose Jamie Foxx as Best Actor, regardless of the fact that he was black, and Morgan Freeman as Best Supporting actor, but MDB as best flick, just shows how clannish they still are. I mean, why give it to Clint? He already has one. And the movie wasn’t that great. It was quite cheezy in fact. Normally, Hollywood gives someone what they call a “mercy” Oscar when he hasn’t received one his whole life, but clearly deserved one, somewhere along the way. It’s a bit of a yukky practice, but it’s better than never getting one at all, I guess. But Clint already DOES have one. Scorsese deserved that “mercy” Oscar. But come to think of it, it wouldn’t even have been merciful, it would’ve been right. Aviator was a damn good movie. I personally am not a fan of Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, but I did love Age of Innocence, Gangs of New York and now, Aviator. Leo didn’t deserve best Actor, and he didn’t get it, but he’ll get it eventually too. Hehe.
So let’s move on to the rest of the Oscars. Chris Rock rocked! He was a bit too careful and played it a bit too tight at the beginning but he definitely loosened up at the end. Some people looked down on the “unglamorizing” of the Oscars, but I think it made it more reachable. Like Chris’ segment of “Jaywalking” at the Magic Johnson Theater was hilarious. And as much as pundits would like not to admit it, it was true. The common man can not relate to the Oscars, and the common woman at most only cares about the dresses. I don’t suggest we start nominating White Chicks to the Oscars, but we also must realize that just because a movie is entertaining does not make it Oscar unworthy. The whole point of the Oscars is to be universal, that any film can win it whether you are Lord of the Rings or Aviator. Michael Bay should be able to slug it out with Martin Scorsese. But, of course, some people will say, that’s what the box office is for. Anyway, that’s just my opinion.
But let’s move on to the most atrocious part of the Oscars, which had nothing to do with the Academy themselves. It was the people who telecasted the Oscars in this country. Channel 9, you suck. How many commercials can you stuff into a 3 and a half hour show? And even worse, you delayed the broadcast so while I was surfing channels during your interminable advertisements, I found out who won the Oscars already on a news ticker on Fox News. Grrr. How would you feel if your PBA Championships were delayed?
But all in all, I had fun. It was good vibes all around, and I think everyone was having a great time. It’s just that next year, we might all be despondent, because we know the Oscars are “luto” or heavily favored towards certain people. Before there was an Oscar-type movie, now are we going to start seeing an Oscar-type person? Sure hope not. Because we have nothing else to watch… for now.
